Lucky, you are both incredibly helpful (and timely with advice), and way too smart for me!

I have no idea what an OEM restore partition is. An OEM restore partition could walk into this room and slap me across the face, and I would simply have to ask him/her, "Who are you?" (Kind of like I did the guy who walked in when I was in the tub at my friend's.)
Nonetheless, if getting to the mysterious and elusive OEM restore partition involves hitting F12 over and over when the computer is starting up and then pressing some other keys as indicated by someone much wiser in the ways of computer meltdowns than I, then I fixed it! At least for now. I'm afraid to move this computer six inches as I suspect it may just decide to burst into flames as retribution.
Never fear, a much more permanent fix arrives tomorrow.

Thank you...as always! Vanessa

Since u r using your Crackberry to publish your blog... I felt compelled to answer your call of distress using my Palm 700... Couple of years of wear but upgraded :)
Now don't throw in the towel yet my VoodooPrincess, first try your Automatic System Recovery, if u attemped your system restore using the OEM restore partition or CD and receive error make sure u don't have any additional hardware connected (usb ect.). That's assuming that this is simply a corrupt Registry and not a hardware problem... Should work. Have fun, Houston over and out:)
